What We Did After a Utility Closet Flood: Reconstruction After Water Damage in Nixa

When we got the call from a homeowner in Nixa, we knew it was urgent. She came home after being gone all day to find that her utility closet had flooded from a burst pipe. Water had spread throughout her ranch-style home, and by the time we arrived, the damage had already soaked into the flooring in the hallway, bedroom, bathroom,  living room, and dining room.

This job was a typical case of reconstruction after water damage in Nixa, and we knew exactly what to do.

Step 1: Water Damage Inspection

We began by carefully inspecting the affected areas. The home had a mix of flooring: wood, carpet, and vinyl. Some areas were visibly wet, but others needed moisture readings to confirm saturation. Underneath, the crawl space also had signs of water vapor, which could lead to mold if left untreated.

Step 2: Water Mitigation and Drying

With the damage identified, our next focus was on preventing further issues and ensuring everything was properly dried out. Here's how we handled it:

Interior Dry-Out Process

We began by removing sections of flooring that were too saturated to save. This included areas of vinyl, carpet, and some wood flooring. Doing this helped prevent water from getting trapped and causing long-term damage. We set up high-powered air movers and industrial-grade dehumidifiers to dry out the subfloor, walls, and surrounding structure.

Crawl Space Moisture Control

In the crawl space below the home, we found a damp and deteriorating vapor barrier. To prevent future humidity and mold issues, we removed the old barrier and installed a brand-new plastic vapor shield. This not only helped seal off moisture from the ground but also created a healthier environment underneath the home.

Step 3: Repairs in the Crawl Space

While inspecting the crawl space, we noticed the sump pump basin had come loose from the corrugated pipe. We reconnected the pipe securely and also fixed some exposed electrical wires that had been damaged by the water. We installed a proper junction box to bring everything back up to code.

Step 4: Reconstruction After Water Damage

After everything was fully dried and cleared for rebuild, we began restoring the damaged parts of the home with attention to detail and quality.

  • Bathroom Vinyl Replacement: We installed new vinyl flooring in the bathroom to replace the sections damaged by standing water.
  • Living Room Floor Repairs: We inspected the living room flooring for water damage and replaced the affected areas to match the rest of the room.
  • Dining Room Touch-Ups: Minor water damage in the dining room was tackled, with flooring repairs and trim refinishing to restore the space completely.
  • Final Walkthrough & Quality Check: We double-checked all work to ensure everything was safe, secure, and looked as good as, or better than, before the water loss.
